Last in our latest round of portable SSD reviews is the Crucial X10 8TB 20Gbps Portable SSD, and yes, we have this in our hot little hands. It is actually quite a feat when you consider this SSD is less than half the size of your smartphone, yet can store all the data, video, music or pictures that you might ever imagine, all together on the same uber-small storage device. But… just how much is 8TB of storage?
Technically speaking, an 8TB SSD is not 8TB once formatted, as firmware and overprovisioning need to be considered It is actually 7.27TB of storage as will be shown in our benchmark results. Still… this 8TB Crucial X10 can store 47,255,000 document pages, 1,817,500 high resolution photos, 123,590 hours of music or 3,635 hours of high def video. For document size and weight, that stack would be some 537 miles high and weighing 472,550 lbs. So we can pretty much see the benefit of this 65mm x 50mm x 9.9mm device which only weighs 42 Grams. Yes… You know a Canadian as they flip between standard and metric values without even reaslizing it.
This photo of the three Crucial X10 Portable SSDs in our possession beside this teaspoon is an ideal depiction of just how small the X10 really is. No…really… one of these three X10’s is honestly 8TB in size! That black X10 in the middle of that photo is the enthusiast or media professional X10 Pro that we reported on here.
Th Crucial X10 Portable SSD is a USB 3.2 Gen 2×2 (20Gbps) device capable of data transfer speeds up to 2GB/s if you have a similarly compatible system. Without such, it may reach 1GB/s speeds, again only if your system is USB 3.2 10Gbps compatible with a Type-C cable, or you can purchase a Crucial USB-C to USB-A adapter for storage speeds up to 540MB/s.
The USB-A adapter is not included in product packaging, as shown here, and packaging includes the X10, a relatively small 20Gbps USB-C to USB-C cable and Quick Start instructions.
The Crucial X10 is constructed of an aluminum uni-body design with hard plastic exterior. It is IP65 dust and water resistant and can survive drops of up to 9.8ft (3m). It speaks to performance of 2100MB/s read and has mass compatibility to include Windows, Mac, iPad Pro, Chromebooks, Android, Linux, PS4, PS5, and Xbox.
The X10 comes with a 3-year warranty and includes software such as a limited time version of Adobe Acrobat Pro and Mylio+ Photos, along with a full version of Acronis True Image. Checking Amazon, we see the 8TB version of the Crucial X10 listed at $439, although their are also 1,2,4 and 6TB versions available at lower prices. Speaking of which, the Crucial X10 6TB version is the first we have ever seen a 6TB SSD advertised.
Let’s check out some speeds…
