If you are a fan of The SSD review, you may remember a post we made and subsequent review of a very innovative storage design by Longsys at CES this past January. It was called the mSSD and was a concept back then, a concept by which we were fortunate to provide full report on right here! That product was a Gen4 SSD of a 2230 form factor (22mm wide x 30mm long) that could be form-fitted to several different configurations dependent on its need. There were two keys to this SSD in my opinion, performance backed up by low temps.
Well, Longsys has gone one further! Not only is the mSSD a marketed product under Lexar and Longsys branding, but also, it is now also available in a Gen 5 form factor!
Let’s start with its physical composition. Gen 5 can double the speeds of Gen 4 and with performance comes heat. Longsys includes its aluminum heatsink with the Gen5 mSSD inclusive of a vapor barrier.
Shown in this laptop, the Gen 5 SSD fits into a typical laptop without difficulty. This SSD was on display and performing at its maximum Gen5 speeds of just under 12GB/s read and 10GB/s write. Many may wonder why these speeds aren’t just a bit higher, but one must consider, this performance is being generated from the smallest form factor possible in the 2230 standard design.
Longsys also had their Gen 4 version on display that we had reported on and it was demonstrating speeds of 7/s read and 6.6GB/s write.
But wait! Things don’t stop there for Longsys! We also discovered a Thunderbolt 5 External SSD that was rather interesting. We have a very strong review program of high-performing external media and this would fit right into that space.
This demonstrates first hand the range of products that can be derived from that 2230 mSSD and performance for this Thunderbolt 5 mSSD is 6.7GB/s read and 4.6GB/s write.
