Kingston Fury Renegade G5 Gen5 SSD Review – SMI SM2508 Controller The Perfect Fit For KIOXIA BiCS8 Memory

When a great flash product is introduced, it catches on.  This appears to be the case with the newest Kingston Fury Renegade G5 Gen5 SSD,  which contains SMI’s latest SM2508 controller.  I know most don’t really care what’s inside an SSD but a healthy knowledge of SSDs is a good thing.  The reason, of course, is that this SM2508 controller is perhaps the first to bring us top transfer speeds in the 14GB/s zone while not pushing the wattage and heat as initial releases have done.  Pair that with KIOXIA BiCS8 NAND flash memory and this SSD is sure to be a hit.

The Kingston Fury Renegade G5 is available in 1, 2 and 4TB capacities on release with an expected release of the 8TB version in Q3 2025.  It is a PCIe 5.0 (Gen5) x4 (4-lane) form factor 2280 (22mm wide x 80mm long) SSD that uses the latest NVMe (Non-Volatile Memory Express) 2.0 protocol.

The ‘KFR G5’ has listed specifications of up to 14,800MB/s read and write with up to 2.2 million IOPS.  It is worthy of mention that, at least right now, the top speed one might achieve with this SSD is by use of an AMD system for high sequential speeds, and an Intel system for low random speeds.

This SSD is comprised of a SMI SM2508 8-channel Gen5 SSD controller, Micron DRAM cache and two pieces of Kingston branded KIOXIA BiCS8 1TB 218-layer 3D TLC NAND flash memory.  This memory is capable of speeds up to 3200MT/s.

The KFR G5 is a single sided SSD and, although wattage is not spoken of in release materials, we can state that this SSD has been running at a relatively cool 35 degree Celsius while in our system. The fact that the SM2508 controller only has a small 6nm footprint is a huge benefit to the overall temperature of this SSD.

The KFR G5 comes with a 5-year limited warranty and free technical support, a free copy of Acronis True Image cloning software, and one can also download Kingston’s Storage Manager software shown in the above photo for free here.

Checking Amazon this morning more than a week before official product release or publishing of reports, we are seeing KFR G5 pricing at $203.99 (1TB), $329.99 (2TB) and $608.99 for the 4TB capacity.  We expect that to come down somewhat considering its top competitor, the Samsung 9100 Gen5 SSD, is significantly cheaper.
