There is always something special about getting the biggest and baddest in hand. We review tons of 2TB SSDs and have had our share of speedy Gen 4 and Gen 5 SSDs as well, but getting a 4TB Gen 5 SSD capable of 14GB/s and 1.7 million IOPS is rather special. On our bench today is the Corsair MP700 Pro SE 4TB Gen 5 SSD and it falls right in line with our having reviewed the rest of Corsair’s MP700 family not so long ago. To say the MP700 family is a rather hot release for Corsair wouldn’t be far off the mark.
The Corsair MP700 Pro SE is a PCIe 5.0 (Gen 5) x4 (4-lane) NVMe 2.0 SSD that is of the 2280 form factor (22mm wide x 80mm long) and is available in 2TB and 4TB capacities, the latter of which we are testing today. Performance specs for the Pro SE are listed right on the front of the package and are 14GB/s read and 12GB/s write with up to 1.7m IOPS read and 1.6m IOPS write. That’s just about as good as she gets…
The Corsair MP700 Pro SE 4TB SSD is available without heatsink, or with Corsairs own active (fan) heatsink or Hydro X heatsink for direct water cooling of the drive. Our sample came without a heatsink and we used the included heatsink from our prior MP700 Pro report which has a fan within for active SSD cooling. There is a cable and SATA 15-pin power connector which must be attached to one of your PC SATA connector cables for the fan to work. This SSD does not achieve sufficient cooling without this connected and when attempting to utilize the heatsink without the fan.
The Corsair MP700 Pro SE contains Phison’s PS5026-E26 ‘Max14um’ 8-channel NVMe SSD controller and runs the MP700 Pro SE at an incredible 2400MT/s to achieve the 14GB/s data transfer speed. This is a two-sided SSD which contains two pieces of Micron 232-layer ‘B58R’ 3D TLC NAND flash memory chips on each side, along with one piece of SKHynix LPDDR4-4266 DRAM memory on each side as well.
Quick note with respect to speed and heat. The Corsair MP700 Pro SE has been set to 2400MT/s which is a higher speed for better performance. The preferable heatsink is an active fan heatsink or the HydroX and not a passive heatsink without fan. The above picture shows that this SSD will throttle performance once it gets above 60°C, as occurred with our ATTO Benchmark testing.
Pricing for the Corsair MP700 Pro SE SSD on Amazon at the time of this report was a bit odd. The 4TB SSD is listed at $624.99 but if you buy it with the fan air cooler it drops to $559.99 which is the lowest price we could find anywhere. Similarly it can be purchased for $639.99 with the HydroX cooler, or the 2TB version can be found at $344.99 with either heatsink. This SSD comes with a limited 5-year warranty which would be void if you ripped the stickers off as we did above. Let’s check out some speeds!
