It’s rare that we open a report with such high praise for a product right from the first sentence. It’s even rarer when that product happens to be an external SSD. In fact, I’ve only done it once before back in 2018 for the Tekq Rapide. That same TB3 external SSD is still sitting right in front of me today. Even more coincidental is that, revisiting that review all these years later, I realize that I began that report almost exactly the same way as this one. That has to be a good sign.
Going back so many years, the thing I absolutely loved about the Tekq Rapide wasn’t simply that, as a small company, they tackled 40Gbps Thunderbolt 3 so early. It was the fact that their enclosure was a CNC cut from a single chunk of aluminum where the base was cut perfectly to allow access to the drives components. Check that report out here! Looking back at that report…those were the early days of Phison as well! If that product still sits in my office after this long, there is a reason.
Enough of the nostalgia and on to the newly released ADATA URBAN TAPSAFE NFC Secure external SSD. This SSD is available in one and two terabyte capacities, and is USB 3.2 2×2 20Gbps fast for speeds up to 1900MB/s. It’s fit and finish is amazing.
It measures 2.7″ x 1.42″ x .76″ and weighs only 2.5oz. It is of a solid metal construction and has a solid metal clip on the bottom for easy security onto your belt.
Better yet, it could provide for cold shoe-free expansion to your media device, especially through a direct connect via USB-C. The ADATA URBAN TAPSAFE is fully compatible with IOS, Android, Linux, macOS as well as several gaming consoles.
It even features a unique magnetic faceplate system that lets users swap designs for a more personalized appearance. Two faceplates are included: a sleek black option and a multi-color design that shifts depending on the viewing angle. But that’s still not the most impressive part.
The URBAN TAPSAFE is a secure SSD in that it is fully NFC compaible with your smartphone once the app is set up. Simply hold your phone over the SSD to unlock it with NFC and the logical drive unlocks and becomes visible when in a PC. Similarly, it locks when the USB-C cable is disconnected.
And that’s still not all there is to the URBAN TAPSAFE. This device also has multi-user authorization where up to nine people can be added, each having either read-only or read and write access to the device.
And whats best? All data is capable of being transferred at 20Gbps speeds up to 1.9GB/s. It comes with a 5-year limited warranty and pricing is yet to be seen as this product is brand new and hasn’t hit the e-tailers just yet!
What more can I say with respect to this work of genius by ADATA? We will be heading to Computex in just a few days and you can bet it will be on my side. Great timing and worthy of Editor’s Choice for sure!
