KIOXIA Exceria G3 Gen5 4TB SSD Review – KIOXIA BiCS 8 Memory Shines in this Consumer SSD

We may have seen things slow down just a bit with the ‘not so recent’ demand for memory that has driven SSD prices through the roof.  SSDs are not alone.  This morning I priced out a RTX 5090 graphics adapter and actually found one peaking over $20,000. What once was reachable at $2000 has risen 5/6x and can now be had somewhere north of 10k.  With respect to SSDs, high prices are a given but it has pushed forward our reliance on DRAM-less SSDs and even QLC NAND flash media storage  in an attempt to get flash media into the consumers hands.

This report speaks to just that and, once again, we are looking at an SSD that enjoys manufacturer visibility just about everywhere else…except North America.  So… I just checked Amazon Canada and USA and it is available there right now and it is even available in what appears to be a KIOXIA store but be aware, this store contains SSDs from third party sellers as well.  There may be return and warranty implications that go along with third party sales.

The KIOXIA Exceria G3 is a PCIe 5.0 (Gen5) 4-channel SSD that is available in one, two and four terabyte capacities.  The SSD we are reviewing today is the 4TB capacity.  This SSD relies on the NVMe 2.0 SSD operating protocol, is an M.2 form factor 2280 (22mm wide x 80mm long), and it is a single sided SSD with an active power rating of only 6.4w.  This is particularly noteworthy as it is a relatively cool running SSD and would be ideal for laptops and ultrabooks.

The KIOXIA G3 is built on a blue PCB with a rather attractive branding sticker, which also enables relatively decent thermal dissipation from the main components.  This is also a  DRAMless SSD and does not contain a DRAM buffer chip.

Under the branding sticker looking left to right are two KIOXIA BiCS8 218-layer QLC NAND flash chips, each with a raw capacity of 2TB, as well as the Phison PS5031- E31 Gen5 4-channel DRAMless SSD controller.

Performance for the Exceria G3 is listed at 10,000MB/s read and 9600MB/s write with up to 1450K IOPS.  This SSD comes with a five-year ‘manufacturers’ limited warranty and, checking Amazon at the time of this report, we could find the 2TB capacity available at $435 with no availability of the 4TB sample at present.

Let’s get to some performance specs shall we?
