Crucial Creates the Worlds Smallest 8TB Portable SSD… and We Have This X10 In For Testing – Computex 2025 Flash Update

A day or two late but we wanted to complete our testing on the newest Crucial X10 Portable SSD for a more complete picture.  Coming in at just 65mm x 50mm x 9.9mm and weighing just 42 Grams, this SSD is the smallest form factor 8TB SSD on the planet right now… and we haven’t got one in hand… well not the 8TB version but our 2TB sample is the exact same size.

The newest Crucial X10 announced last week at Computex is a revamp of the original X10 done right.  It has speed.  It has capacity. It has a decent 3-year warranty and it is IP65 rated for dust and water submersion, as well as a 3m/10ft drop.  It contains Silicon Motions newest SM2322 single chip portable SSD controller, also announced last week at Computex, and is a USB 3.2 2×2 portable SSD capable of speeds up to 2100MB/s.

In the package, we get the X10 Portable SSD, a Type-C to Type-C cable and a ‘Get Started’ manual. If you want this for a USB Type-A system (and many will) check Amazon for a decent Type-C to Type-A Adapter. It is worth mentioning that the only way to achieve top speeds with the X10 are with a device that has a USB 3.2 2×2 port or Thunderbolt 4/USB4 or higher.

Running a quick Crystal DiskMark Test we were able to confirm that our 2TB sample was capable of just under 2100MB/s read and 1900MB/s write.  Low random 4K read and write performance is a bit low but the X10 is not meant to work with low 4K OS type files. This portable SSD is meant for the transfer of videos, pictures, music and general document type files.

The newest Crucial X10 is already available on Amazon and priced at $139.99 (1TB), $249.99 (2TB), $395.99 (4TB), and $779.99 (8TB) with no availability for the 6TB capacity at the time of this report.

Although we haven’t one in hand just yet, Crucial has also revamped the X10 Pro for media professionals with virtually exact build and specs, except the x10 Pro is rumoured to be capable of a sustained write speed of over 2000MB/s with a top capacity of 4TB.  Check Amazon for availability and pricing.

I actually love the feel of this X10 in hand.  It is constructed of a unibody metal with a hard rubber exterior, Type-C port on one side and a lanyard opening on the other.  We are presently waiting on the 8TB version from Micron, as well as the X10 pro as seeing is believing…  Hope to return with updates soon enough.  Until then… Editor’s Choice!

Quick note that the Amazon link in this sentence has the color of a link but is plain text. As well, the mention of the 6TB capacity is the only one in the article. It’s a weird call out when the rest of the article seems to be about the 8TB model specifically.

Thank you for the comment and the link has been fixed. We don’t quite understand this, “As well, the mention of the 6TB capacity is the only one in the article. It’s a weird call out when the rest of the article seems to be about the 8TB model specifically.” The article is based on our sample 2TB X10. The 8TB is highlighted as there is not another portable SSD of this size and that capacity. The only time we mention 6TB is in stating that, at the time of the report, that is the only capacity not available for sale. Thanks again for jumping in!

thats interesting … i saw this, the date, and looked the one i bought october 2024.
apparently changing the specs and chip of a consumer ssd isnt enough to release a new branding
the only obvious difference is the model number:
    new – CT2000X10SSD9-02
    old – CT2000X10PROSSD902

well. atleast it drives down the price of the older ones temporarily until they are out of stock
