TSSDR TEST BENCH AND PROTOCOL

SSD testing at TSSDR differs slightly, depending on whether we are looking at consumer or enterprise SSDs. For consumer SSDs, our goal is to test in a system that has been optimized with our SSD Optimization Guide. To see the best performance possible, the CPU C states have been disabled, C1E support has been disabled, Enhanced Intel SpeedStep Technology (EIST) has been disabled. Benchmarks for consumer testing are also benchmarks with a fresh drive so, not only can we verify that manufacturer specifications are in line but also, so the consumer can replicate our tests to confirm that they have an SSD that is top-notch. We even provide links to most of the benchmarks used in the report.

In creating the RAID 0 array, we have decided to go with a 64K stripe size. Choosing a different stripe size varies greatly depending on the application use case.

BENCHMARK SOFTWARE

The software in use for today’s analysis is typical of many of our reviews and consists of Crystal Disk Info, TRIMcheck, ATTO Disk Benchmark, Crystal Disk Mark, AS SSD, Anvil’s Storage Utilities, PCMark Vantage, and PCMark 8. We prefer to test with easily accessible software that the consumer can obtain, and in many cases, we even provide links. Our selection of software allows each to build on the last and to provide validation to results already obtained.

Crystal Disk Info is a great tool for displaying the characteristics and health of storage devices. It displays everything from temperatures, to the number of hours the device has been powered, and even to the extent of informing you of the firmware of the device.

As promised, the Crucial MX300 supports SMART monitoring. It also features a working temperature sensor, a host writes counter, and other useful attributes to follow over the life of the drive. The firmware revision we are testing on today is different than that of the 750GB model we tested before. It is M0CR021. Crystal Disk Info also shows that TRIM and DevSleep are supported as well.

TRIMCHECK

We’ve covered TRIMcheck in the past. It is a great tool that easily lets us see if TRIM is actually functioning on a SSD volume in your system.

As can be seen in the screenshot above, TRIM is indeed working in RAID 0, which demonstrates the MX300’s TRIM support works when utilized as a single drive too.

ATTO DISK BENCHMARK VER. 3.05

ATTO Disk Benchmark is perhaps one of the oldest benchmarks going and is definitely the main staple for manufacturer performance specifications. ATTO uses RAW or compressible data and, for our benchmarks, we use a set length of 256mb and test both the read and write performance of various transfer sizes ranging from 0.5 to 8192kb. Manufacturers prefer this method of testing as it deals with raw (compressible) data rather than random (includes incompressible data) which, although more realistic, results in lower performance results.

As our first benchmark, ATTO shows that the 1050GB MX300 is off to a good start as a single SSD as well as in RAID 0.  As a single SSD, it reaches read speeds of up to 535MB/s and writes of 516MB/s. In RAID 0 we were able to get double that with reads reaching 1,068MB/s and writes reaching 1,017MB/s. In RAID 0 we are also able to see that the smaller file size read performance improved greatly over the single SSD configuration. Reads are more than double that of a single SSD at 4KB!

I wonder if Crucial SE still can’t update SSD firmware if boot drive is an NVMe device. I reported this problem ages ago, curious if they fixed this annoyance.

Performance-wise. I would still pick 850EVO. If anyone wants blazing speed for data then get any supported SSD, activate RAPID mode (careful, not advisable on boot drive) and enjoy. I have one activated on 1TB model with R/W at 7500MB/s and NVMe is nowhere (owning couple of i750s).

Would you benchmark also the smallest model? I can’t find any benchmarks of MX300 275GB on the net, and I’m curious how much performance it sacrifices due to reduced die count.
