Plextor M9P Plus NVMe SSD Review (512GB)

REAL WORLD FILE TRANSFER COMPARISON

We have put the Plextor M9P Plus NVMe SSD beside the best in the business for our true to life data testing.  In this test, we simply place 15GB files representing music, video, pictures and operating systems onto the target drive.  We then copy each file from one place on the target disk to another, recording the time taken for the transfer.

Once again, the Plextor M9P Plus performed very well where it counts.  Its file transfer speeds are amongst the best we have had to date.

REVIEW ANALYSIS AND FINAL THOUGHTS

We started off this report with an understanding that, very least, SSDs are a bit confusing when we try to differ what SSD should be used for what task.  What qualifies an SSD as a value proposition, compared to one that we might look at for gaming, or one for media work.  The controller and NAND flash memory are the deciding factors for the most part.  In this SSD, we have the Marvell Eldora plus NVMe 8-channel controller coupled with Toshiba BiCs4 TLC NAND flash memory, both of these products being quality components.  Performance dipped just a bit in our synthetic (simulated) benchmarks but this SSD shone bright for PCMark 8 and our true data transfer regime.

The Plextor M9P Plus AIC 512GB SSD has an MSRP of $96.99 which is a false negative.  It is a good thing.  Looking at the price, some might mistake this SSD as a value SSD but the truth is the M9P Plus would ba a great SSD for more demanding tasks such as gaming or those that work in media.  It is a great SSD at a great price.

3.4GB/s throughput. 379K IOPS.  5-Year Limited Warranty.  RGB Lighting.  Great AIC design.

By the looks of your reviews, it seems that the PCIE 4.0 SSDs are really no better than what we see here, considering the extra heat which must be dealt with, even if sequential R/W is faster. I did notice the excellent 4K Randoms of the PCIE 4.0 SSDs though, very nice.
It seems to me that for even demanding PC users that in real world use they wouldn’t notice much, if any, differences between them.
I was all gung-ho over PCIE 4.0 SSDs, however even though the PCIE 4.0 platform is great, the SSDs just seem to not be as important at this time yet.
Thanks for yet another excellent review, Les.
