REPORT SUMMARY AND FINAL THOUGHTS
The Toshiba XG6 NVMe SSD is the first to show off Toshiba’s newest 96-Layer BiCS 3D TLC NAND flash memory and its first showing on our bench was none less than spectacular. It has been shipping to manufacturers for a short time now and we have to say that it is, without a doubt one of the best SSDs we can imagine finding in a new ultrabook. Available in capacities of 256GB, 512GB and 1TB, we would like to have seen the 2TB model join the group but understand that a 2TB SSD is just not cost effective in a new system purchase. Let’s add a five year warranty to that.
Performance. We were a bit concerned with the low 4K results at first but our testing showed consistent read and write performance above 3GB/s. There was a compatibility issue with PCMark Vantage but let’s face it, this is a very dated software program that came out when Vista was the OS of the day. We followed up with PCMark Storage 2.0 Testing as well as Extended Testing, and I actually found myself having to confirm that I wasn’t testing the wrong SSD, as I typically have a top dog for my OS.
Our true data testing showed off the Toshiba XG6 NVMe SSD like no other. We knew that the OS result might be a bit slow, but never expected the result that occurred with transferring music and photographs. The Toshiba XG6 pulled off the best times we have seen to date. The ONLY SSD to ever surpass this is the Intel Optane, which doesn’t fall into the M.2 class of SSDs. Great job Toshiba!
