Phison PS5018-E18 Gen 4×4 NVMe SSD Controller Prototype First Look (2TB) – Phison Raises the Bar


SSD testing at TSSDR differs slightly, depending on whether we are looking at consumer or enterprise storage media. For our Phison E18 Prototype 2TB NVMe Gen 4 M.2 SSD testing today, our goal is to test in a system that has been optimized and will reach top speeds possible.

We are using our ASRock X570 Creator Test Bench which is AMD based and contains the AMD Ryzen 3700x Gen 4 CPU.  Our PC has been overclocked from 3600Mhz to 4300MHz and memory has been set at a XMP profile of 2667MHz.

The software in use for today’s analysis is typical of many of our reviews and consists of Crystal Disk Info, ATTO Disk Benchmark, Crystal Disk Mark, AS SSD, Anvil’s Storage Utilities, AJA, PCMark 8 and TxBench. Our selection of software allows each to build on the last and to provide validation to results already obtained. In addition we have also included our own data transfer speed comparison.


Crystal Disk Info is a great tool for displaying the characteristics and health of storage devices. It displays everything from temperatures, the number of hours the device has been powered, and even to the extent of informing you of the firmware of the device.



Crystal Disk Info validates that our SSD is running in PCIe 4.0 x4 (four lane), and also that NVMe 1.4 protocol is in use. Something most never realize is the impact that reviewers have on end-product hardware.  Look at the host reads and writes on the right side and one can easily see that this SSD has been going non-stop since arrival.  It will be the same on all other sites. There is simply no chance whatsoever that a sub-standard product makes it to market these days if it has been through our hands.


ATTO Disk Benchmark is perhaps one of the oldest benchmarks going and is definitely the main staple for manufacturer performance specifications. ATTO uses RAW or compressible data and, for our benchmarks, we use a set length of 256mb and test both the read and write performance of various transfer sizes ranging from 0.5 to 8192kb. Manufacturers prefer this method of testing as it deals with raw (compressible) data rather than random (includes incompressible data) which, although more realistic, results in lower performance results.


Our ATTO result demonstrate speeds of 6.97GB/s read and 6.17GB/s write which is a bit lower than expected, but still the industry high at this point.

    This is already amazing; however I am very eager to see you get the finished product with the newer Micron B47R TLC memory and the latest firmware for testing.
    Have you noticed much difference heat-wise between the E18 and E16 SSDs?

      Operating temperature for this SSD is low 20s and it is much cooler than the previous Gen 4 SSDs we have been seeing, top temp reached being 70C.

    how long until controllers for nvme storage get integrated right on the cpu, like they do with RAM? 🙂

    Is the latency comparable to Intel 905P?
    How does the Random Read compare in your opinion.
