Corsair MP700 Pro XT Gen5 2TB SSD Review – Phison’s E28 Controller Features Low Power and Top Speeds

Our report today takes a close look at Corsair’s latest flagship SSD, the MP700 Pro XT, marking the first industry release of a drive featuring the Phison PS5028-E28 Gen5 NVMe 8-channel controller. We first offered a ‘performance preview‘ of this controller back in June, and more recently, we included our E28 sample in ‘The Ultimate Laptop SSD Battery Test.’ In that test, the E28 outperformed all 11 competing SSDs, coming in second only to the original Samsung OEM drive installed in our 2025 LG Pro 16″ 2-in-1 Ultrabook.  Below is the chart; click it for a full-size view.

Two key points stand out in this chart. First, the E28 controller was outperformed only by the OEM SSD preinstalled in our ultrabook, a drive that was likely fine-tuned by the manufacturer for optimal balance between battery life and performance. Second, the E28 engineering sample delivered over an hour longer battery life than leading competitors, including the Crucial T710, Micron 4600, SanDisk SN8100, and Samsung 9100. This result reinforces the E28’s, and by extension, the Corsair MP700 Pro XT’s reputation as a high-speed yet power-efficient Gen5 SSD, setting it apart from earlier releases. Our objective today is to validate the real-world performance of Corsair’s MP700 Pro XT.

The Corsair MP700 Pro XT is a PCIe 5.0 (Gen5) 4-lane (x4) SSD that uses the NVMe 2.0 operating protocol and is of the M.2 2280 (22mm wide x 80mm long) form factor.  It is available in 1, 2 and 4TB capacities.

The MP700 Pro XT is of a black PCB and contains a black graphene metal branding sticker over its components to assist with heat dissipation.  This is a one-sided SSD which, when combined with that graphene sticker, enables a very cool running product considering it speaks to under 6.5 watts active power and <5mW Dev Slp power.

Performance is listed at 14.9GB/s read and 14.4GB/s write with up to 2700K read and 3300K write IOPS at low 4K random disk access.  The MP700 Pro XT has AES 256bit encryption and additional features include the standard TRIM, S.M.A.R.T and garbage collection (GC).

Our sample MP700 Pro XT SSD contains the newest Phison PS5028-E28 Gen5 8-channel NVMe SSD controller, a SK Hynix 2048MB DRAM cache buffer along with two chips of what Corsair will only describe as 3D TLC NAND flash memory.  We had done an extensive search on the identification listed on the NAND with no luck and Corsair remains to state that it is only 3D TLC. Conversation with industry peers seems to provide that the NAND in this SSD is SanDisk BiCS8 3D TLC NAND, however there is no definite confirmation from Corsair.

Manufacturers suggested list pricing for the Corsair MP700 Pro XT Gen5 SSD is $159 (1TB), $249 (2TB) and $459 for ther 4TB version which we find just a bit pricey, but not at all out of the ordinary for a new release SSD such as this. This SSD has a 5-year limited warranty.  Check Amazon pricing.

    Any thoughts or ideas?
I bet it is Micron NAND as the Pro SE was Micron NAND but having said that also could be the Sandisk/Kioxia as they have a joint venture for NAND production

Not sure also, did research too and couldn’t find the exact brand of the MP700 Pro Xt’s NAND chips. Hopefully, whatever this is, it is reliable.
