8K RANDOM READ/WRITE
We precondition our enterprise SSDs using 100% random 8K writes at QD256 for two drive fills. Performance data is recorded every second. We track this data to monitor the enterprise SSDs transition to steady-state and to verify that steady-state conditions are achieved before initiating queue depth testing. Steady-state is established after a full drive fill and the average steady-state 8K random write performance is approximately 265K IOPS.
The performance average of the SMI MonTitan in 8K random write is 265K IOPS which we expected to be half of that of 4k as it is moving twice the amount of data. It maintained a straight performance curve from QD8 to QD4096.
The SMI MonTitan 8K average read performance is 1694K IOPS.
8K 70/30
8K 70/30 is representative of a typical database workload and the MonTitan returned an average 566K IOPS.
8K 50/50
The SMI MonTitan maintained an average of 417K IOPS throughout QD 64-4096
REPORT SUMMARY AND FINAL THOUGHTS
The Silicon Motion MonTitan Gen5 7.68TB U.2 Enterprise SSD did fairly well in our testing and we were happy to see that its performance bettered listed specifications in read/write throughput and IOPS. This enterprise SSD is indeed fully capable and provided high sequential results of 14.6GB/s read and 10.7GB/s write with a 4K read IOPS high of 14.2GB/s, just a bit below specifications.
The MonTitan is our fifth 1-DWPD SSD tested to date and sits about mid-range in the group with a slight advantage going to write IOPS steady state performance. We really like that the MonTitan platform is available in SSD Reference Design Kits where the NVMe standard and Host-based flash transition layer firmware is user-programmable. Silver Seal!
