KIOXIA Award Winning 245TB Gen5 LC9 SSD Supported By Gen 5 CD9P & CM9 Enterprise SSDs at FMS 2025

PCIe 5.0 (Gen 5) has settled into the flash world very well and become the standard in the past year plus, as has SSD increasing capacity points, endurance and power efficiency.  We have spoken plenty of KIOXIA’s newest award winning Gen 5 LC9 with its 245TB capacity, still reaching great performance of 12GB/s throughput and over 1 million IOPS for a QLC SSD.

This is only the tip of the iceburg for KIOXIA and, as much as I wish I could, there is simply no way to cover all presented in their exhibit at Flash Memory Summit in San Jose this week.  So… Let’s simply concentrate on a few recent Gen 5 additions; the CM9 and CD9P SSDs.  And a big thanks to Cameron Brett, KIOXIA Sr. Director of Enterprise and Cloud Storage Marketing, for taking the time to give us a personal tour.

KIOXIA GEN 5 CM9 ENTERPRISE SSD SERIES

The KIOXIA CM9 is a PCIe 5.0 enterprise SSD designed for things such as AI, big data/analytics, financial trading and many other such tasks where read or mixed use intensive tasks are key.  This SSD is available in capacities up to 61TB in the 15mm 2.5″ form factor, as well as 30TB in the E3.S form factor.  Its performance speaks to up to 14.8GB/s read and 11GB/s write with up to an incredible 3.4 million IOPS.blank

The CM9 affords up to a  read intensive one drive write per day (DWPD) endurance or three DWPD for mixed use.  This SSD is KIOXIA proprietary in that it comprises of KIOXIA controller, firmware and BiCS 8 3D NAND flash memory which utilizes their newest CBA technology.  The difference between this SSD and the next CD9P is that the CM9 is a dual-port SSD.  This benchmark was through a running test at the display:

The CM9 is built for an enterprise 24×7 workload, has power limit protection as well as end-to-end data protection, SIE/SED, FIPS 140-3 security accreditation and is sampling to limited customers.

KIOXIA GEN 5 CD9P ENTERPRISE SSD

The KIOXIA CD9P might resemble the CM9 but it is a single port design and we will see some differences in performance and capacity.  It is still based on KIOXIA’s latest BiCS Gen 8 TLC NAND flash memory and utilizes their CBA technology which boosts power efficiency, performance and storage density.  This video provides a better explanation of CBA…

The CD9P also comes in a 2.5″ 15mm (up to 61TB) or E3.S (up to 30TB) form factor and speaks to 14.8GB/s read and a slightly lower 7GB/s write with up to 2.6 million IOPS.  This SSD is also available with or without SED (self-encrypting design).

Lastly, we would like to thank the entire KIOXIA team for being great hosts during our stay at FMS 2025 in San Jose!  It is not often we see the President and CEO of a multi-billion dollar corporation attending and taking part in events with company members.  Maybe I am just a bit to old-world I guess!
