Orico NVMe M.2 SSD Enclosure Review

It has been some time now since JMicron released their JMS583 chip which serves as a USB 3.1 Gen 2 to PCIe Gen 3×2 Bridge Controller that enables very high speed and large volume storage in a relatively small M.2 SSD enclosure.  To say the least, this chip has done very well and we have reviewed it in enclosures to include the MyDigitalSSD M2X and most recently the Plugable Type-C NVMe SSD Enclosure.

To cut to the chase, it is a portable M.2 enclosure that can support up to 2TB capacity SSDs with performance up to the 1GB/s mark.  So today we are going to be speaking a bit about the Orico NVMe M.2 SSD Enclosure and you might want to consider this if you are in the market for just this.

The Orico NVMe M.2 SSD enclosure can accommodate up to a 2TB SSD and specifications list its read and write performance at 950GB/s.  It is constructed of a very very solid two piece aluminum shell and something we liked right off about the construction of this shell is that the unit is constructed so that the base slides into lace and is fastened by only one screw.  This definitely shows quality of workmanship which ties right in with the smoothed and rounded edging all around the device.

When we open up the device and take a look at the PCB, we see the JMS583 chip, but also, we notice several copper strips running along both sides.  The strips serve the purpose of dissipating heat from the SSD with the help of four silicone thermal conductive pads.  The PCB is equipped to fit all M-keyed form factor M.2 SSDs up to that of 2280 (80mm).  This enclosure is also compatible with Windows 7/8/10 and Mac OS.

Orico didn’t neglect to include everything including the kitchen sink with their packaging.  Looking inside, we see the enclosure, USB 3.1 to Type-C and Type-C to Type-C cables, a screwdriver, screw kit, instruction manual and Thank you card.  No… that 2TB Samsung 970 EVO NVMe SSD is not included; it will be the subject of our testing today.

Looking at Amazon right now, we see the Orico NVMe M.2 SSD enclosure priced at $42.99 which is an absolute dynamite price when when compared to the other similar tested units that we have spoken of.  Lets turn to Page 2 to see how testing fared…

Plugable is superior to these screw down enclosures — so easy to use.

Agree totally except for the price of the plugable. I use it for so much simply because it is a very simple design. however, credit must be given to those items that are an excellent build as well.

Great job! Will this work with a Samsung 950 pro?

950GB/s that’s some insane speeds I know you meant MB/s

Nice review, thank you, I’m looking for an enclosure to make use of NVME drives that are just laying around.

Looking at Amazon.de I think I found the product but I’m not exactly sure if it’s the same model, there seems to be slight difference in the model numbering, it’s kinda confusing.

Could you please confirm if that’s the same or not?: https://www.amazon.de/ORICO-Aluminium-SSD-Geh%C3%A4use-ultraflacher-Typ-C-Geh%C3%A4use/dp/B07R4MLSX2/ref=sr_1_220_sspa?keywords=orico&qid=1560499685&s=gateway&sr=8-220-spons&th=1
