Phison PS5028-E28 Gen5 Reference Design SSD Preview – An Unexpected Match-Up of the Best

PCMARK 10 FULL SYSTEM STORAGE BENCHMARK

PCMark 10 Storage Benchmarks produce an overall score as a measure of drive performance. Comparing devices is as simple as comparing scores. The tests also measure and report the bandwidth and average access time performance for the drive. Each test uses traces recorded while performing real-world tasks such as booting Windows 10, starting applications such as Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator, working with applications such as Microsoft Excel and PowerPoint, and copying several large files and many small files.

The Phison E28 placed at the top of all SSDs tested to date with PCMark 10 Full System Drive Benchmark.

PCMARK 10 QUICK SYSTEM STORAGE BENCHMARK

The Quick System Drive Benchmark is a subset of the Full test and is more representative of typical daily usage to show what would be expected regarding hybrid SSD performance on a day-to-day basis.

Once again, the Phison PS5028-E28 Gen5 2TB Reference Design SSD was the best score received to date in PCMark 10 Quick System Drive Benchmark.

TRUE DATA TESTING

For our True Data Testing, we simply loaded 15GB video, music, photo and OS files onto the Phison PS5028-E28 Reference Design Gen5 2TB SSD and copied the data to a new folder on that same disk.

Yet again, the Phison E28 pulled ahead of the WD_Black SN8100 and took top spot in real data transfer testing.

PASSMARK PERFORMANCE TEST

We thought we might add a few extras in our report today, PassMark Performance Test DiskMark component being a nice addition. This software tests sequential reads and writes, along with IOPS and compares the result with millions of other SSDs worldwide.

The Phison E28 once again placed in the top two of all tests to date and neck and neck with the WD_Black SN8100.

FINAL FANTASY XIV: ENDWALKER BENCHMARK

The Final Fantasy Benchmark is a new tool in our arsenal and geared specifically to the gamer. The software is installed directly on the SSD and the SSD tested, providing and end result of FPS and scene transition times.

This is the only benchmark that the E28 did not place in the Top 10, but in all honesty, this is a difficult benchmark as it is just over 1 second from where this SSD sits and Top spot.

When drives with E28 will be available in shops and at what price ? Any rumors on it ?

As for testing with Z890, try to use motherboard with M2 connected directly to graphics PCIE. Mobos like ASUS ROG Strix Z890-E Gaming WIFI or GIGABYTE Z890 AORUS Master have such m2 slots. Additional card used as bridge, may add latencies lowering results. Tweak Town use such motherboard, with great results.

My guess is that E28 SSDs will start appearing within 2 months. The identified problem is global with all 200 series motherboards and Intel, ASUS, ASRock and other motherboard manufacturers have identified and spoken to this. Before our article we tested alongside Tweaktown to verify our discovery as Jon is a very close friend of mine. The most effective way to gain accurate readings is using an M.2 AIC adapter directly to the CPU PCIe lanes. We do this as does Tweaktown. It is easy to identify websites testing using the M.2 slots by their sub=par results with respect to the Intel chipset. They are much the same as the article. Thanks for commenting

Any idea on what the power consumption would be like on the E28? PCIe 5 SSDs have seen their power consumption go up compared to the previous generation and many PCIe 5 SSDs need a heatsink.

Also, any idea if this will out pressure on pricing? Right now PCIe 5 drives cost almost 2x per GB compared to the PCIe 4 SSDs.
