Patriot Viper PV593 Gen5 4TB SSD Review – Yet Another SM2508 Gen5 SSD Controller Success Story

Patriot memory has been around since 1985 and were one of the early companies to have provided The SSD Review with an SSD sample for review.  It was the Patriot Torqx 2 SATA 2 128GB SSD and that was back on 14 May 2011…14 plus years ago. I reviewed that SSD and had to laugh when checking it out once again; so much has changed yet so much has stayed the same.  Believe it or not, we haven’t had a Patriot product in our hands since 2017. That changes this morning with our report of their newest Viper VP593 Gen5 4TB SSD, an SSD held under the Patriot’s ‘Viper Gaming’ umbrella of the company.

This SSD is one of several that has had a very similar configuration, this being the Silicon Motion SM2508 Gen5 SSD controller paired with Micron’s 232-layer G8 3D TLC B58r Fortis Flash NAND flash memory. Checking back at our most recent Lexar NM1090 Pro Gen5 SSD review, an SSD with the same controller and memory, we can see very distinct differences in ‘ic’ layout on the PCB itself which is common amongst different SSD manufacturers.

Ther Patriot Viper PV593 is a PCIe 5.0 (Gen5) 4-channel (x4) form factor 2280 (22mm wide x 80mm long) SSD that operates on the NVMe 2.0 SSD operating protocol.  This SSD is available in 1,2 and 4TB capacities and has listed performance of up to 14GB/s read and 13GB/s write throughput with up to 2000K IOPS read and 1650K IOPS write.

The PV593 houses a Silicon Motion SM2508 8-channel Gen5 NVMe SSD controller which was built on the TSMC 6nm process.  This controller is known for better power efficiency resulting in a cooler total solution running at approximately 7 watts max.

There are two pieces of memory on each side of the PCB as well as a DRAM buffer chip between the memory and controller.  The memory is Micron’s G8 ‘B58r’ 232-layer 3D NAND flash memory and each package represents 1TB of raw memory.

We had spoken of two-sided SSDs previously as they can be somewhat limiting with respect to ultrabook placement.  We cannot fit any two-sided SSDs into our 2025 LG gram Pro 2-in-1 Ultrabook, as was shown in this photo from our Samsung 9100 Pro Gen5 SSD review.

MSRP pricing for the Patriot Viper PV593 is listed at $140 (1TB), $220 (2TB) and $360 for the 4TB version we are testing in this report. Endurance is listed at 700TBW (1TB), 1400TBW (2TB) and 3000TBW for our 4TB sample today.  Check Amazon availability and pricing.
