Memblaze Pblaze7 7946 Gen5 6.4TB E3.S Enterprise SSD Review – Meet the Mixed Workload Database King

A short time ago we did a review of the MemBlaze Pblaze7 7A40 Gen5 Enterprise SSD and this SSD contained  T-Head Zhenyue 510 (also known as TH7700) 16-channel Gen5 SSD controller, along with 8-pieces of YMTC Xtacking 3.0 (X3-9070) 232-layer 3D TLC NAND flash memory capable of running at up to 2400MT/s.  That SSD was a one drive write per day (1-DWPD) SSD and it had a capacity of 7.68TB as overprovisioning was the standard 7% vice the 27% overprovisioning of a 3-DWPD SSD,  which naturally has a lower capacity based at 6.4TB.

On the bench today we have the 7A40’s brother which is the Pblaze7 7946, a 3-DWPD SSD at 6.4TB capacity and fitted with the Marvel ‘Bravera’ SC5 Gen5 16-channel SSD controller.  This SSD utilizes that same YMTC memory described in the 7A40, although specific customer requirements may mandate use of Micron 8th Gen 232-layer ‘B58r’ 3D TLC NAND flash memory.  Both SSDs come with a 5-year limited warranty, however in general, a 3-DWPD SSD with significantly more overprovisioning provides the end user with triple the endurance and much better sustained low 4K random write IOPS.

As a bit of a reference, our recent reviews of 1-DWPD SSDs include the SMI MonTitan, ScaleFlux CSD53420, Dapustor R6101, Kingston DC3000ME and MemBlaze 7A40, while our Micron 7600 MAX and Micron 9550 MAX reports have been 3-DWPD samples. An easy locator for all of these reports can be found [here].

The Memblaze PBlaze7 7946 is en enterprise grade PCIe 5.0 (Gen5) x4 (4-lane) NVMe 2.0 SSD that is available in 2.5″ U.2, E3.S, E1.S and HHHL AIC form factors and available in 32.TB, 6.4TB and 12.8TB capacities.  These capacities are specific to the E3.S form factor. This SSD has <25 watt power efficiency and prefered operating systems include Ubuntu, Windows server, RHHEL, SLES, CentOS, and VMware ESXi.  It has feature support that includes power failure protection, full data path protection, SMART, flexible power management, and OCP 2.5.  This also includes TRIM, Multi-namespace, AES 256-bit enbcryption and Crypto Erase and other features listed in the detailed spec sheet below.

blankThe E3.S design is typically 7.5mm thin x 112mm long by 76mm wide  to allow the enterprise SSD to fit into standard server bays while supporting high density and high performance.  In the case of our 7946, it is of a two-piece flat black aluminum shell and secured with Phillips screws. At each end are ports or openings which allow for the passage of forced air to pass through the SSD itself and cool the SSD components.

Performance for the Memblaze Pblaze7 3-DWPD SSD is listed at 13.5GB/s read and 9.5GB/s sequential write throughput with 2800K sustained 4K random read IOPS and up tp 720K sustained random write IOPS.  Performance is variable depending on the PBlaze7 configurations and complete specs can be seen here:
