8K RANDOM READ/WRITE
We precondition our enterprise SSDs using 100% random 8K writes at QD256 for two drive fills. Performance data is recorded every second. We track this data to monitor the enterprise SSDs transition to steady-state and to verify that steady-state conditions are achieved before initiating queue depth testing. Steady-state is established after a full drive fill and the average steady-state 8K random write performance is approximately 255K IOPS.
The full performance average of the Memblaze 7A40 in 8K random write is 255K IOPS which we expected to be half of that of 4k as it is moving twice the amount of data, but this performance curve is very impressive. It levels off way down at QD4 and remains steady throughout, pushing up just a bit near the end.
The 7A40 read performance of 1700K is very impressive, but still, we might have liked to see that line level off perhaps a QD sooner.
8K 70/30
8K 70/30 is representative of a typical database workload and 540K IOPS from a 1-DWPD SSD is very impressive.
8K 50/50
Once again, 400K 8K 50/50 write IOPS is something only a few enterprise 1-DWPD SSDs might achieve. Very impressive.
REPORT SUMMARY AND FINAL THOUGHTS
When we first started this report, we spoke of the Memblaze Pblaze 7 7A40 Gen 5 Enterprise SSD as being one of the few hidden gems of the SSD industry. Having now demonstrated its performance throughout this report, we believe we have established just that. The 7A40 demonstrated high sequential steady-state read IOPS of 3300K with over 14GB/s throughput. Equally impressive through 4/8K random write IOPS and 128K sequential IOPS is how quickly performance reached its peak (QD2/4) and leveled off, maintaining almost exact performance throughout the remaining QD.
All in all, might we consider the MemBlaze PBlaze 7 7A40 Gen5 7.68TB enterprise SSD an industry leader? When speaking of drives with 7% overprovisioning (1-DWPD), there is no doubt it falls into that category but Memblaze has gone a step further to ensure the success of this SSD. They have created a separate SKU (7940) for US customers utilizing North American based components. This is something that most might not expect, however, when you have stumbled upon such a great SSD, it is worth the effort.
As we are in Canada with amazing worldwide traffic to which the US has a very strong presence, we hope to receive the US version which is the 7940 at some point. Just as importantly, we would also hope to received the 7A46 with 27% overprovisioning and a total capacity of 6.4TB to demonstrate what a 3-DWPD SSD is capable of.
Great work Memblaze!
