We had a great opportunity to spend some time with Phison this CES, the lions share of that time learning about their aiDAPTIV software which will be the subject of a further report once we can get it all together, as well as trying the software out in person. While at their suite, we did however, catch a live demo on a brand new soon to be released product, the Phison PS5037-E37T SSD controller.
The E37T controller is a PCIe 5.0 4-channel DRAMless SSD controller that speaks to under 2.3 watts active power efficiency. This SSD achieves 14.7GB/s read and 13GB/s write with up to 2000K IOPS at low 4K random disk access. Check out the below photo and look at the 134MB/s read and 425MB/s QD1 speeds; these are perhaps the best we have seen to date for low 4K random disk access throughput.
The E37T accomodates NAND at up to 4800MT/s and is ideal for 2230, 2242 and 2280 form factor SSDs. This SSD is intended for notebooks, handhelds and other mobile solutions demanding the highest in performance where power efficiency is key.
Next up we have the latest release of a Phison PS5028-E28 Gen 5 controlleri and this sample is 8TB in capacity making it one of the highest capacity and most powerful SSDs avalaible today. We have reviewed this controller previously here and the performance remains at 14GB/s read and write data throughput.
As much as we would like to see a single sided SSD, this does not quite achieve that just yet. While you see four NAND packages with the controller on the front (2TB per package), what we dont see is the single cache buffer chip that is on the back. This definitely speaks to a cooler overall solution, however some ultrabook users might want to ensure proper fit in their system as we have shown that two sided SSDs won’t fit into our own LG gram Pro in our past reports. Nevertheless…. 14GB/s at an 8TB capacity is a beautiful combination.
