KIOXIA Showcases a Handheld Petabyte of Storage along with Their Newest BG7 Client SSDs | CES 2026 Update

I guess…. most people might not know that companies aren’t always front and center at tech shows showing off their products with large displays on the showfloor.  There are times when they do attend, all flash aside (Bit of a pun… get it?), specifically for client meetings and low key introductions.  Such was the case with KIOXIA this year at CES and we were still able to drop by for a bit of a chat.  Of course, front and centre right now is their newest BG7 Client SSD that we wrote about a few days back and it will be available in 2230, 2242 and 2280 sized M.2 SSDs.  These SSDs are what you might find inside if you bought a laptop.

Trust me when I say this is great news as I can remember back a few years when the quality of SSDs that went into laptops, at least at the client level, was far from impressive.  The BG7 is a PCIe 4.0 SSD that will achieve performance up to 7GB/s with up to 1 million IOPS and in capacities up to 2TB. The key here is their sizing as so many new products are now coming out that need that tiny 2230 (22mm x 30mm) form factor tied into such performance and capacity.

Next up was KIOXIA’s enterprise level LC9 Series SSD which is available in an unbelievable capacity of 245TB and has performance up to 12GB/s. This SSD is available in 2.5, E3.S and E3.L form factors and we should have one in hand soon enough for review.  Before this SSD, I don’t think it would be possible to literally hold a petabyte of storage in ones hand as Karen has done here:

So how much is a petabyte exactly? A petabyte equates to about 500 billion sheets of printed text or 20 million full filing cabinets.  It is the same as taking 4000 digital photos each day for the rest of your life, or in terms of distance, it is 9 football fields of 1GB sized flash drives all lined up.

Next up, KIOXIA was showing off their display of automotive UFS chips with respect to performance and I found this interesting as UFS isn’t something we often speak of or read about, yet it is in our hands every day.  You will find this small fully flash and controller integrated ‘SSD’ inside your cell phone.

Our interest in the above photo lies in the speed boost from the old UFS 3.1 standard to UFS 4.1 which now hits 4276MB/s ‘for automotive application and design as shown in this above photo.

Once again, a big thank you to Alex, Cam and Mia for the walk-through and social invite which took place later in the day.  Oh….  something else I found interesting was this explanation of the basic functioning of AI and the importance of SSDs!

“A petabyte equates to about 500 billion sheets of printed text or 20 billion full filing cabinets.”

Your math works out to a single filing cabinet only holding 25 sheets of paper.
