Kingston A1000 M.2 NVMe SSD Review (480/960GB)

AJA VIDEO SYSTEMS STORAGE BENCHMARK

The AJA Video Systems Disk Test is relatively new to our testing and tests the transfer speed of video files with different resolutions and Codec.

REAL WORLD FILE TRANSFER COMPARISON

For our Real World File Transfer Comparison, we have included the , Samsung 960 ProSamsung 860 EVO , HP EX900 NVMe SSD and WD Black 7200RPM 1TB HDD in our testing with the Kingston A1000 1TB NVMe SSD. This test is conducted through the transfer of data from one spot on the test drive to another to give us the truest of transfer speed results for that device.

Bit of a surprise for us in our true file transfer testing was the Kingston A1000 bringing in better performance than the HP EX900 which is a PCIe 3.0 X4 SSD.  Aside from that, we can also see how it bettered the Samsung 860 EVO M.2 SATA 3 SSD and absolutely destroyed the performance of the WD Black hard drive.

REPORT ANALYSIS AND FINAL THOUGHTS

Kingston’ sole purpose in marketing the A1000 NVMe PCIe 3.0 X2 SSD was to provide an entry-level low-cost solution which could provide significantly higher performance, while at the same time having equal if not better pricing than SATA 3 SSDs and HDDs in today’s market.  The Kingston A1000 is available in 240, 512 and 960GB capacities and provides performance in the area of 1.7GB/s read and 1GB/s write with up to 216K IOPS, according to our testing.

Our true transfer speed testing displayed rather impressive results and we fully expected the A1000 to do better than the Samsung 860 EVO M.2 SATA 3.  Looking at the HP EX900 PCIe 3.0 X4 NVMe SSD, however, we certainly did not expect the A1000 to display better performance and that was just icing on the cake.

Given this SSD has a 5-year warranty included, a great price can do wonders for the success of the Kingston A1000.  MSRP,  atleast right now, seems just a bit high with the 960GB being $403.   Checking Amazon, $349 for the 1TB size and $189 for the 480GB is much better we think, although this price might change.  These prices bring the price point of current SSDs down which is always great.  So…solid product, decent performance, great warranty and price.  We are pretty confident that this SSD will sell plenty, as all Kingston products seem to do.
