Samsung PM830 SATA 3 256GB mSATA SSD Review – Ultrabooks To Gain Capacity and SATA 3 Speed

HDTUNE PRO VER. 4.6 “ BENCHMARK

HDTune Pro is a great software program that lets us have a look at all aspects of testing through several separate tests:

HDTUNE PRO VER. 4.6 “ FILE BENCHMARK

HDTUNE PRO VER. 4.6 – RANDOM TESTING

HDTUNE PRO VER. 4.6 “ EXTRAS

HDTune Pro consists of several tests that really round our SSD testing.  Along with the great disk access speed of 0.053ms we see in the first bench, the Random and Extra testing confirms that this SSD is solid in SATA 3 transfer speeds.

SAMSUNG SSD MAGICIAN

Samsung SSD Magician is a free download and probably the most complete ‘toolbox’ available today as it, not only optimizes and fine tunes your system and SSD, but also, it allows the user to adjust over provisioning to suit their needs.  Our original intent was to do a secure erase with it in order to see if test results changed but we quickly learned that the Samsung SSD Magician is not compatible with the new PM830 SATA 3 line.  We were still able to pull up a performance test though:

we all waited test PM830 256GB SSD in Toshiba Z830 ultrabook…
why you test ultrabook SSD in desktop?!

As stated in the article, we could not get the SSD to run at SATA 3 speeds in the Z830 as we did with the T50 in its review. We are hoping to have an ultrabook in the office very soon that will enable SATA 3 testing and this review will be accordingly updated.

Is the pm830 at least as fast as the OEM SSD in the Z830?

Much more so… I will try to dig them up after CEBit!

I hope that you’ll keep pestering Samsung to make this drive available through retail channels, I’m waiting to buy one for my late 2011 hp Envy 17 3D.

Thanks for commenting on this as you are not alone and Samsung takes a close look at all product reviews and comments such as yours.

the arrow in the pcmark vantage results chart is pointing to ‘pm800 msata’. should it be pointing to the ‘pm830 256gb’ result higher up, or is that a typo?

Negative, that is the correct position, however, the model should be 830 and will be amended Tx!

I would love to be able to buy this in the retail channel as I’m building a “small as possible” top end gaming rig — this would make a great drive to run everything off of. The Runcore 120GB just isn’t quite big enough to get everything I need on it. Guess we’ll have to see where the price point lands for this drive, but I really hope that Samsung gets it into the retail network!

Great article on the state of the [samsung] art. Do you know what processors are slated for “Rev B” Series 9? I’ve been patiently waiting for the next version of their S9. Cheers.
