OCZ RevoDrive 3 x2 480 GB PCIe SSD Review – Conclusions

The word of the day has got to be ‘proprietary’ because OCZ has created an amazing storage medium in the RevoDrive 3×2 and the design is completely theirs.  Because it is propietary VCA 2.0 and contains OCZ’ patented Superscale Storage Accelerator, their choice of the new SandForce SF-2281 processors is simply genius.  In doing so, they seem to have taken a page right out of SandForces playbook and used it themselves.  OCZ engineers have built upon an idea, kept it close to heart, protected it,  and just may find out that their pricing strategy will make it impossible for any other manufacturer to compete in this form factor for years to come.

PERFORMANCE

The OCZ RevoDrive 3 x2 PCIe SSD will enter the market with performance never even dreamed about previously in the consumer arena.  At 1.5GB read, 1.2GB write and 200,000 IOPS, the Revo 3×2 literally triples the performance of any ‘upper tier’ new generation SSD.

CAPACITY

Only through the introduction of 25nm NAND are we finally seeing the capacities that the consumer and industry has dreamed about for some time.  The Revo 3×2 wil be a perfect fit for the consumer enthusiast at 240GB, and yet, the performance and capacities of 480GB and 960GB will draw the attention of many in the enterprise world.

VALUE

A new generation ‘SandForce Driven’ 240GB SSD will run you around $550 whereas the same capacity Revo 3 x2 will run you a mere $150 more for 3 times the performance. We don’t think there is any question that OCZ has keyed in on the ‘enthusiast’ and ‘prosumer’  as well as enterprise interests but don’t be surprised if we see sales far beyond that estimate.  The unfortunate part is retailers and e-tailers alike will key in on the demand and, just as with other SSDs, prices will elevate as availability just can’t keep up.

AVAILABILITY

The OCZ Revo 3×2 SSD will be available in 2-3 weeks. If there was a negative anywhere in this report, this is it.  To say that we have received over a hundred e-mails, pm’s and backlinks since our Revo3 ‘Quick Look’ in the last week is an understatement.  Enthusiasts worldwide are salivating at the chance to be the first to grab one of these SSDs and supply will just not be able to keep up.  You can take that to the bank.

AWARDS

We hope that OCZ has considered building a new ‘Awards’ case because the Revo 3×2 is going to fill it quickly.  There is absolutely no doubt that the Revo 3×2 is cutting edge technology that speaks well of innovation.  Performance is such that others in the industry will be scrambling to get anywhere close to Revo 3×2 numbers, yet at the same time, OCZ has guaranteed value with the 240GB where they could have tried to push higher.  The 240GB price point is the ‘sweet spot’ that will guarantee those straddling the fence will make the jump.
