Transcend Demos SuperMLC and New Products – Flash Memory Summit 2016 Update

Many vendors at FMS this year are introducing evolutionary products and Transcend is no different. While at their booth we spotted them demonstrating the performance of their SuperMLC NAND. SuperMLC was originally developed to deliver industrial customers the high performance and reliability that SLC offers, but at a lower, more cost effective price point.

In order to do this Transcend takes MLC NAND and programs it to operate like SLC. Although this halves the capacity, it increases endurance considerably, up to 30,000 P/E cycles, and performance can be two to three times that of smaller capacity models over standard MLC.

Interestingly, however, Transcend is now putting their SuperMLC into recording media such as microSD cards, SD cards, and CFast cards to help media professionals. The CFX600 SuperMLC card even reads and writes at 500MB/s! Because it is so fast and has so much more endurance, up to 10 times, over standard MLC and only a small difference in price, it offers a great value for a professional’s workflow. A media professional no longer needs to constantly purchase new cards every year or two due to wear. Purchasing these SuperMLC cards will save them some dough in the long run.

Additionally, Transcend had on display an array of other products including their standard MLC based industrial flash memory cards and 4K ready media. The microSD and SD cards are all very competitive in terms of performance and capacity as they are rated for up to 95MB/s read and 60MB/s+ write.

Finally, at the end of their booth was their lineup of M.2, mSATA, half slim, and 2.5″ SATA SSDs. With competitive performance metrics and capacity options from 32GB to 1TB, they have something for almost any use case.

Other than that, there aren’t any big announcements form Transcend, but be sure to keep up to date as we continue our walk around the FMS showroom floor!
