LSI 9265-8i MegaRAID Card vs Adaptec 6805 RAID Card – The Ultimate 6Gb/s RAID Showdown

EXTERNAL CHARACTERISTICS

This LSI card is composed of a very small low-profile MD2 form factor which measures 6.6 X 2.536.  This keeps the footprint of the card very small and eases installation. LSI went out of the way to keep this card small. Instead of expanding its size for this updated revision of the 9260, they opted to place a daughter board on the rear of the card which holds the cache of the card.

Underneath the silver heat sink are the brains of this card, the LSISAS2208 Dual- core 6Gb/s ROC- x2 800MHz PowerPC Processor. Near the PCI-E bracket we find the two SFF-8087 x4 connectors. These allow fan out cables to connect up to four devices to each port, allowing direct access to eight devices. Utilizing an expander will allow you to connect up to 128 SAS/SATA devices to the card for large enterprise applications.

This generation of ROC from LSI has proven to be a very popular sort. Several companies have begun using these on a wide variety of RAID controllers.

I unfortunately have the Adaptec 6805 controller and… LOL… where is my garbage can…
I’m running a setup with 4x Kingston 240GB HyperX in R5, the ATTO results arent that shabby… I get 1.5GB/s write and 2.1GB/s read (seq) but…. the short random reads are just terrible… in Winsat it’s only 170 MB/s(!?!).
Funny thing is that when I turn off controller cache I get 9000 MB/s in sequential 64 read… 🙂
I dont however get more than 5ms max response time vs your 55ms value.

Next steps to do:
PC –> Adaptec –> Garbage bin
LSI –> PC

Hahaaa… my 6805 beats the LSI in the AS SSD copy benchmark 2 of 3:
ISO 880 / 1.22
Program 377 / 3.73
Game 701 / 1.97
