Microsemi Announces New Smart Storage Platform & Controller Technology for Servers / Data Centers

Microsemi is announcing its latest generation of storage controllers, which will be featured in their new Smart Storage Platform for servers / data centers.  These new controllers, designated as the SmartROC 3100 and SmartIOC 2100, are designed to deliver new levels of power, performance, security and reliability.

Microsemi Smart controller release storage platform diagramModern data centers require:

  • performance — take advantage of SSDs for performance and frequently used applications, while enabling large arrays of hard-disk drives (HDDs) for cold storage
  • less power-hungry solutions to reduce the costs of powering and cooling servers
  • improved security — to help address situations where multiple users access storage, and to improve the security of private data residing in hybrid and public cloud environments
  • increased reliability  —  to reduce downtime, improve response times, and to provide best-in-class user experiences

Microsemi’s SmartROC 3100 and SmartIOC2100, powered by their Unified Smart Storage Stack, achieve significant gains in all of these key data center requirements.

Microsemi Smart controller release usage case 1 - enterprsie serverThe SmartROC 3100 and SmartIOC 2100 take advantage of Microsemi’s recent move to 28nm architecture with these new controller solutions to provide a number of key customer benefits, including a healthy 35% power savings as compared to competitors’ solutions.  Microsemi has achieved an industry-leading 1.6 million 4K random read IOPS, which is an impressive 60% increase over their prior generation of controllers.  Microsemi’s maxCrypto is the industry’s only data-at-rest controller-based encryption.  As to quality and reliability, Microsemi’s Smart Storage Stack IP has been deployed on over 30 million servers.

Microsemi Smart controller release usage case 2 - secure data storageSmartROC 3100 and SmartIOC 2100 can be integrated into custom OEM, ODM and data center hardware designs.  They can also be incorporated into custom board designs, including standard stand-up PCIe cards, mezzanine cards, and custom motherboard designs.  Market segments benefiting from the SmartROC 3100 and SmartIOC 2100 include enterprise servers, hyperscale data center servers, SDS and hyperconverged deployments, and tiered storage configurations.

Microsemi Smart controller release usage case 3 - SDS serverMicrosemi’s SmartROC 3100 and SmartIOC 2100 are 12Gb/s SAS/SATA RAID-on-chip storage controllers that combine with Microsemi’s Smart Storage Stack.  The 12 application-optimized product variations can be configured with 8, 16 or 24 ports, with the 16- and 24-port versions including 2 boot drive ports.  SmartROC and SmartIOC feature total pin compatibility, allowing for PCB reuse when upgrading.  The SmartROC 3100 and SmartIOC 2100 also include a DDR4 DRAM interface, as well as cache support.

Microsemi Smart controller release usage case 4 - cold storageMicrosemi’s next-generation SmartROC 3100 and SmartIOC 2100, combined with their Unified Smart Storage Stack, provide enhanced quality and reliability, industry-leading performance and power savings, as well as enhanced security.  For OEMs/ODMs, they offer reduced total engineering costs, bill of materials cost savings, and connectivity that enables increased drive density.  For more information, please visit Microsemi’s website here.
