SMART Announces Optimus Eco Enterprise SSD — Up to 2TB in 2.5″ Form Factor Using 19nm MLC Flash

SMART Storage Systems, a leading enterprise SSD technology developer, is announcing their new Optimus Eco enterprise SSD — the first SAS 6 GB/s SSD utilizing 19nm multi-level cell (MLC) Flash.  Anticipating the ever-changing needs of enterprise data centers, SMART continues their efforts to usher in a new era of Flash storage.  Their Optimus Eco SSD offers an industry best combination of performance, endurance, capacity and cost in a 2.5″ form factor enterprise SSD.

Many organizations are doing more with less by building their own hyperscale architectures.  They are seeking to combine best-in-class hardware and software to meet growing data center requirements, while lowering their overall costs.  On the maintenance expense side, data center managers are more and more looking to the highest-capacity drives in order to provide more capacity per rack, which results in reducing the overall storage footprint.  Industry analyst Gartner predicts that by 2016 the average capacity of SSDs utilized in enterprise storage and data center applications will be greater than 1.1TB.  By utilizing SSDs that feature more cost-effective 19nm MLC flash and that can provide needed endurance for write-intensive applications, users can achieve a dramatic reduction in total cost of ownership (TCO) for their storage array(s).

According to Mark Lakowicz, vice president of sales and marketing at SMART Storage Systems, “This announcement marks the beginning of a new era in flash storage.  We are bringing the cost effectiveness of 19nm flash to a high performance enterprise SAS SSD platform, without compromising on endurance or reliability.  This unprecedented combination will enable storage architects and data center managers to design high-performance, high reliable, high available storage systems while reducing cost, and minimizing TCO.”

Optimus Eco utilizes SMART’s Guardian Technology Platform, a suite of proprietary enterprise features and enterprise-class endurance enhancements, to deliver up to 10 drive writes per day (DWPD).  Also, the new Optimus Eco SSD is designed to provide consistent performance for the entire 5-year warranty period, delivering up to 500 MB/s sustained read and 500 MB/s sustained write performance; and also delivers up to 100K read IOPS and 45K write IOPS.  The Optimus Eco’s full feature set includes SMART’s third generation backup power circuit technology, full data path protection, data fail recovery, thermal monitoring, and AES 256-but encryption.  The Optimus Eco will be offered in capacities ranging from 200GB all the way up to 2TB.  OEM pricing for the 2TB version starts at $3999.00
