Axtremex Announces External SSD With USB 3.0 And 1 TB Capacity

Axtremex Technology, a global supplier of high performance memory solutions, has announced the release of their 1TB USB 3.0 SSD.

Weighing in at only 45 grams, the new drive will deliver read/write performance of 240 MB/s and 150 MB/s respectively.

Axtremex’s new product will no doubt be very successful at winning over those who have heavy duty external storage requirements but still want to retain the high speed of internal drives.

Some of you are no doubt wondering why anyone would need an external SSD at all. We’ll, for starters, I’m sure there are many consumers who can’t help being a little clutsy. Compound this with the fact that their external storage solution is probably the last thing on their mind, and it’s easy to see how many potential buyers might be extremely appreciative of a portable drive that’s of the solid state variety. I have to say, for users who frequently find themselves picking up their expensive equipment off the ground, non-mechanical products really may be a good choice.

Another advantage is the USB 3.0 interface, which should help a lot when it comes to transferring huge files on a regular basis. Luckily, with 1 TB of storage capacity, Axtremex’s new offering shouldn’t really have much trouble when it comes to keeping up with the storage needs of end-users, which seem to get more excessive every year (do you really need all those photos?). I do have to wonder though, why we haven’t seen many external solutions utilizing the Thunderbolt interface. I know it’s “Apple’s idea” and all, but with more and more motherboard manufacturers integrating it into their products, it seems like only a matter of time until the interconnect becomes widespread enough to warrant integration into SSDs (both internal and external). Seeing as its real world performance outclasses that of USB 3.0 on every front, it would be nice to see more of these products come to fruition.

When push comes to shove, it seems that Axtremex has a solid offering waiting in the wings. Although the price is sure to be quite high, I’m confident that there are many consumers that will find the huge capacity and high speed interface indispensible. If I had the budget, I’d probably have one by my side in a heartbeat.
