These drives are SATA based, come in both M.2 and 2.5″ form factors, and deliver more than enough speed for most consumers out there. For those who need more performance, however, WD has just jumped aboard the NVMe train. Today we got to take a close-up look at the latest addition to their SSD product line, the WD Black PCIe SSD.

Utilizing a PCIe 3.0 x4 interface and the NVMe storage protocol, the WD Black PCIe SSD boasts sequential speeds of up to 2050MB/s read and 800MB/s write and random performance of up to 170K/134K read/write. WD is launching just two capacities, 256GB and 512GB, at the price points of $109.00 and $199.99 respectively. The WD Black PCIe SSD is rated for 80/160TBW endurance and comes with a 5-year warranty.

A lot of time went into testing this SSD to ensure it would be compatible with any system it is in and therefore it gained WD’s Functional Integrity Testing (F.I.T.) Lab certification. It also features thermal and power management to help with consistent performance as well as lower power consumption. As an added value proposition the WD Black PCIe SSD includes free, downloadable, WD SSD Dashboard software, which allows continuous performance, capacity monitoring, and firmware updates. This is also available for their other WD Green and Blue SSDs as well as their HDDs.

Be sure to check back soon as we continue to trek through the adventures CES 2017 has in store.
